A press report in the BBC news notes that the UK is seeing a rise in the number of children developing type 2 diabetes (the figures for England and Wales show 533 children and young people are now diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, an increase from about 500 the year before), which accounts for 2% of child diabetes. The press report notes that the Local Government Association believes that these figures are too high and that tackling obesity is one solution. They are calling for teaspoon sugar labelling and a reduction of sugar content in fizzy drinks, greater provision of tap water in schools/restaurants and for councils to be given powers to ban junk food advertising near schools, to be included in the childhood obesity strategy. The strategy is expected to be released from the Department of Health over the summer.
