A related editorial highlights that these results are consistent with the few randomised clinical trials and with observational studies that have evaluated the efficacy of opioid medications in the treatment of different types of chronic pain. These findings question the justification for the use of long-term opioid therapy in the management of patients with polyneuropathy.
