Acute urinary retention and risk of cancer: population based Danish cohort study
Study (n=75 983) found an excess of 218 cases of prostate cancer, 56 cases of urinary tract cancer, 24 cases of genital cancer in women and 12 cases of colorectal cancer per 100 person years within 3 months of diagnosis of urinary retention vs the general population.

Authors suggest occult cancer should possibly be considered in patients aged 50 years or older presenting with acute urinary retention and no obvious underlying cause.
