Algorithm based smartphone apps to assess risk of skin cancer in adults: systematic review of diagnostic accuracy studies

Review of 9 studies of 6 different identifiable smartphone apps found they cannot be relied on to detect all cases of melanoma/other skin cancers, and concludes current regulatory process for awarding CE mark for algorithm based apps does not provide adequate protection to public

SPS commentary:

According to an editorial, the current regimen is clearly unsatisfactory, and collectively as a society, decisions must be made on what amounts to good evidence when evaluating health apps; who is responsible for generating, validating, and appraising this evidence; and how post-market monitoring of regularly updated software should be organised.
