C-reactive protein and clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19

This research (n=2,601) found CRP levels above the median value (108 mg/L) were associated with VTE (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.61–3.36), acute kidney injury (2.11, 1.76–2.52), critical illness (2.83, 95% CI 2.37–3.37), and mortality (2.59, 2.11–3.18), compared with CRP below the median.

SPS commentary:

The authors acknowledge the limitations of their retrospective, observational study; for example although the study period preceded the finding that immunosuppression improves clinical outcomes in patients with severe COVID-19, steroids or tocilizumab were administered in some cases, and their timing and duration of use were not recorded in this dataset. Based on their findings they suggest that inflammatory biomarker-based approaches to risk stratification and treatment should be evaluated to improve outcomes of patients with Covid-19 infection.
