Case Rates, Treatment Approaches, and Outcomes in Acute Myocardial Infarction During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic

US cross-sectional study (15,244 hospitalisations in 14 724 patients with acute MI), reported decreased case rates in the early COVID-19 period (–19.0 cases per week; 95% CI, –29.0 to –9.0) followed by a modest recovery after 5 weeks (+10.5; +4.6 to +16.5).

SPS commentary:

Although no difference in treatment approaches were reported, the risk-adjusted mortality rate in ST-segment elevation MI increased substantially (OR, 2.40; 95% CI, 1.65-3.16) and after risk adjustment (1.52; 95% CI, 1.02-2.26) which requires further investigation.
