Clinical course and risk factors for mortality of adult inpatients with COVID-19 in Wuhan, China: a retrospective cohort study

Study (n=191) found that the most common co-morbidity with COVID-19 virus was hypertension (30%), and that the odds of in-hospital death increased with increasing age (OR 1.1 per year increase, p=0.0043). Median duration of viral shedding was 20.0 days in survivors.

SPS commentary:

A related commentary discusses this research with authors suggesting that more attention should be paid to comorbidities in the treatment of COVID-19.  Many of the older patients who become severely ill have evidence of underlying illness such as cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, or malignant tumours. These patients often die of their original comorbidities; and therefore all original comorbidities of individuals with COVID-19 should be evaluated quickly on diagnosis of the infection.
