Covax must go beyond proportional allocation of covid vaccines to ensure fair and equitable access

Analysis compares the vaccine nationalism and WHO’s proportional allocation scheme for COVID vaccine allocation and suggests the Fair Priority Model, which distributes vaccine based on risk of premature death, economic disruption, and better realises WHO’s ethical principles.

SPS commentary:

The Covax Facility (Covax) is a multilateral initiative aimed at ensuring that all countries have “fair and equitable access” to covid-19 vaccines. It enables countries to pool their resources and risk by collectively investing in vaccine candidates while developing the political and logistical infrastructure needed for vaccine distribution and vaccines are financed and allocated in a transparent and coordinated manner.
