COVID-19: Make it the Last Pandemic

Panel found weak links at every point in chain of preparedness and response. Preparation was inconsistent and underfunded. Alert system was too slow — and too meek. The WHO was under-powered. The response has exacerbated inequalities. Global political leadership was absent.

SPS commentary:

Since September 2020, the Independent Panel has systematically, rigorously and comprehensively examined why COVID-19 became a global health and socio-economic crisis. In its report, it presents findings and recommendations for action to curb the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure that any future infectious disease outbreak does not become another catastrophic pandemic.

The panel's Co-Chairs, who have been asked to present the report to the 74th World Health Assembly, to be held from May 24 to June 1, 2021, present an overview in the Lancet.
