COVID-19 vaccine surveillance report (week 20) includes updated estimates of deaths and hospitalisations prevented in England

As of 9 May 2021, it is estimated the Covid-19 vaccination programme has prevented 13,000 deaths in those ≥60 and 39,100 hospitalisations in those ≥65. New analysis estimates 2 doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine provides around 85-90% protection against symptomatic disease.

SPS commentary:

The methods used for these estimations now take into account the impact of both the 1st and 2nd dose of vaccination on hospitalisations and deaths (previously only used the impact of the first dose). These figures do not take into account the indirect effects of the vaccination programme, and therefore are likely to be underestimations.

After 2 doses, effectiveness was estimated as 90% (95% CI 82-95%) for the PfizerBioNTech vaccine and 89% (95%CI 78-94%) for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine compared to unvaccinated.
