COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer/BioNTech and COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca): current advice

A summary is provided of recent advice from the MHRA on the COVID-19 vaccines authorised for use in the UK, including advice for people with allergies and for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

SPS commentary:

Updates include:

  • Although people with a previous history of allergic reactions to the ingredients of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine should not receive it, those with any other allergies such as a food allergy can now have the vaccine. For patients who are allergic to polyethylene glycol (PEG), found in the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is a suitable alternative.
  • Women who are breastfeeding can be given the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which is in line with pregnancy and breastfeeding advice for the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine.
