Antimicrobial stewardship: systems and processes for effective antimicrobial medicine use – guidance (NG15)

This guideline covers the effective use of antimicrobials in children, young people and adults. It aims to change prescribing practice to help slow the emergence of antimicrobial resistance and ensure that antimicrobials remain an effective treatment for infection.

NICE will follow up this guideline with a public health guideline next year, which will focus on changing the public’s knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours in relation to the use of antimicrobials. It is also working on a quality standard on antibiotic prescribing. Please see the links below for further information.

 

Health Education England, NHS England and Public Health England (PHE) have issued a joint Patient Safety Alert highlighting the challenge of antimicrobial resistance and signposting to the toolkits developed by PHE to support the NHS in improving antimicrobial stewardship in both primary and secondary care.
