The Central Alerting System has issued a patient safety alert regarding on this area, noting that a review of patient safety reports has focused work on four keys areas where neonatal hospital admission occurs; hypoglycaemia, jaundice, respiratory symptoms and asphyxia. The alert notes that between 2011 and 2013, up to 30% of neonatal unit admissions where considered to be avoidable, and their findings highlight the need for improved identification of babies who are at risk of deterioration.
