An editorial notes that CV disease is one of the leading causes of comorbidity in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, especially in patients with inflammatory arthritis. It adds that although the reasons for this increased risk is not fully understood, the combined effect of traditional CV risk factors and a chronic inflammatory burden along with a genetic component is known to account for the development of accelerated atherosclerosis in these patients. It calls for routine assessment of CV disease risk in all patients with chronic inflammatory diseases.
