Summary
Review of 2000 patients in 4 EU countries (Finland, Poland, Germany, Austria) found that 86% of dexmedetomidine use occurred in the ICU, mostly dosed according to the product label. Paediatric use (5.9%) occurred mainly in the ICU (75.6%) for sedation.
UKMi comment
Extensive literature reports of dexmedetomidine use in children, in patients outside the ICU and by alternative routes have raised concerns about widespread off-label use and this review was requested by the EMA.
