The researchers reiterate from these findings that fertile women using AEDs should take folic acid supplements continuously.
According to an editorial, almost half of pregnancies are unintended in the general population, and this rate appears to be higher among women with epilepsy. It adds that given the known positive effects of periconceptional folate on pregnancy outcomes, women of childbearing potential should be advised to take folate supplements continuously, especially those taking AEDs. It notes that questions remain on exactly what dose of folate should be used, because some studies in the general population suggest adverse risk due to high-dose folate. Furthermore, the most effective and safe doses may differ between women in the general population and women taking AEDs.
