Study (n=55,502) found moderate chocolate intake may be inversely associated with AF risk: rate of AF was lower for people consuming 1–3 servings/month, 1 serving/week and 2–6 servings/week, vs. less than once/month, although residual confounding cannot be ruled out.

An editorial notes that despite some notable limitations of the study, the findings are interesting and warrant further consideration, especially given the importance of identifying effective prevention strategies for AF. It calls for pragmatic randomised trials that focus on the efficacy of AF prevention strategies, as well as implementation trials that address dissemination.
