Analysis (n=291) found that treatment of patients experiencing acute ischaemic stroke due to a large vessel occlusion with intravenous thrombolysis before mechanical thrombectomy (MT) did not appear to provide a clinical benefit over MT alone.

An editorial notes given 85% of patients in MT trials received intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), this research highlights an important group of patients in whom MT was successful without IVT. It suggests that the current study provides critical data that can be used to design a definitive randomised clinical trial.
