Summary
This research, based on a time-series model, estimates that introduction of PCV13 in the US (which replaced PCV7 in the immunisation schedule) averted over 30,000 cases of invasive pneumococcal disease and 3000 deaths in the first 3 years.

There are two types of pneumococcal vaccine in use in the UK - pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). The latter is recommended for use in infants as part of routine childhood vaccination; whereas the PPV23 vaccine is used in adults over 65 years and in those aged 2 years and over who are in clinical at-risk groups.
