This study (n=1,222,670) reports that, after 4.3 years follow-up, an alternative CV risk-based strategy (QRISK2 ≥10%) could prevent > 1/3 CV events than the 2011 NICE strategy and > 1/5 CV events than the 2019 NICE strategy; with similar number treated per event avoided.

A related commentary notes the importance of assessing cardiovascular risk in the management of hypertension, and suggests that a strategy to offer antihypertensive therapy based on absolute cardiovascular risk (as with QRISK2 ≥10%) might prevent more cardiovascular disease than a strategy based on blood pressure alone (as with NICE guidance).
