Summary
Study reports that lower respiratory tract infections (LRIs) are 5th-leading cause of death overall. At global level, the burden of LRIs has decreased dramatically in last 10 years in children younger< 5 years, although burden in people > 70 years has increased in many regions.

A commentary notes that though the numbers generated by the models presented by the GBD 2015 LRI Collaborators might have limitations, they do paint a vivid picture of the progress still to be made in the prevention of pneumonia deaths. It adds that effective interventions for reducing pneumonia deaths are available, and a vaccine to prevent RSV infection could be available in the near future.
