Examining infertility treatment and early childhood development in the Upstate KIDS Study.

This prospective cohort study of 4824 mothers to 5841 children (1830 conceived with infertility treatment and 2074 twins), showed that infertility treatment was not associated with the risk of the children failing any developmental domain (adjusted OR 1.33 (95% CI 0.94 to 1.89)).

The study authors will continue to evaluate the children periodically until 8 years of age, as it is not always possible to diagnose some forms of developmental disability by age 3.

 

NHS Choices has featured an assessment of this study and concludes that whilst these results are reassuring for couples undergoing treatment, more research in larger and different populations, including a wider spread of people who have received the different forms of infertility support, would be required to confirm these findings.
