Further findings highlighted include an estimated increase in the number of over 65s with dementia (by around a third by 2035) and a doubling of those with dementia and two or more other conditions. Further results showed different trends in dependency among men and women, with the latter having a longer period of low dependency.
The authors noted several limitations to their research; for example it was assumed that risk factor profiles of cohorts remained constant over time, and some factors that might affect dependency and disability (e.g. alcohol use) were not included.
A related Comment notes that “Care provision at this intense level for more than one million people in 2035 will require careful thought and planning at both local and national level.”
