Global, regional, and national burden of tuberculosis, 1990–2016: results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors 2016 Study

Globally, age-standardised TB incidence and mortality has decreased in both HIV-ve and +ve individuals. Several regions had higher rates of incidence and mortality than expected; for multidrug-resistant TB this was highest for Eastern Europe.

For the UK, the ratio of observed to expected on the basis of Socio-Demographic Index was slightly above 1 for age-standardised incidence of drug-susceptible TB (1.119) and multi-drug resistant TB (1.092). For all other measures (including HIV tuberculosis incidence and mortality), the ratio fell below 1 (indicating lower than expected).

 

The authors note that if current trends continue, few countries are likely to meet the SDG target to end the tuberculosis epidemic by 2030.
