Review of 7 US datasets found that only 34% of people who overdosed enrolled in medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). MOUD use was associated with decreased all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 0.47, 95% CI 0.32-0.71) & opioid related mortality (aHR 0.41, 0.24-0.70)

A related commentary highlights that expanding access to medications for opioid use disorder is essential in order to reverse a current trend of increasing fatal opioid overdoses in the US. To achieve this, it is important to remove the stigma from the disease of addiction and from the medications that can be used to treat it.
