Study (n=39,400) found low-risk patients (CHA2DS2-VASc=0 [male],1 [female]) have a truly low risk for stroke and bleeding. With 1 additional stroke risk factor (score 1 & 2 respectively), there was significant increase in event rates (particularly mortality) if non-anticoagulated

NICE guidance published in 2014 on the management of atrial fibrillation suggests that whilst taking the bleeding risk into account, anticoagulation should be considered for men with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 1; and offered to people with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 2 or above.
