Potential Impact of Prescribing Metformin According to eGFR Rather Than Serum Creatinine

This analysis of 3,902 US adults with diabetes who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys found that use of estimated GFR to determine metformin eligibility, instead of serum creatinine, can expand the population for whom metformin is likely safe.

 The UK SPC for Glucophage® states that metformin is contraindicated if creatinine clearance is <45 ml/min (eGFR < 45 ml/min/1.73m2).
