An NHS Choices assessment of press reports of this study suggests the findings are reassuring for parents of children with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) whose doctors have recommended statins. It advises caution about the authors' suggestion that many more children should be diagnosed with FH and offered statin therapy, as the study has limitations, such as small sample size, short duration of follow-up, and lack of routine recording of side effects. It suggests the information from this study may help doctors and parents when discussing whether children with FH should start taking statins.
