Analysis of cervical samples from 361 women aged 20-25 years referred to colposcopy found human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination was associated with a lower prevalence of HPV 16 (8.6% v 4.7%) and a lower number of cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2+.
UKMi comment
The authors note that in women who had received the HPV vaccine, there was slight reduction in the positive predictive value (PPV) of colposcopy for the detection of CIN2+ (from 74% to 66.7%). This reduced PPV is at the lower acceptable level of the UK national cervical screening programme guidelines.
