Summary
This RCT (n=193) reported that EMA401, an angiotensin II type 2 receptor antagonist (100mg BD) provides superior relief of postherpetic neuralgia vs. placebo at the end of 28 days of treatment (mean reduction pain scores −2.29 vs. −1.60 ; p=0.0066), and was well tolerated.

A Comment article notes that the average effect size was small and further studies that assess the optimum dose, possible predictors of response, and efficacy in combination with other neuropathic pain analgesics are required, as are studies of long-term efficacy and safety. One encouraging factor about these data is in the identification of a possible new drug for the treatment of neuropathic pain with a new mechanism of action that could offer hope for patients who have insufficient pain relief with currently available drugs.
