Summary
In this open label RCT (n=1086 smokers), treatments did not differ notably on any abstinence outcome measure at 26 weeks: 23.8% of the nicotine patch group was abstinent, vs 23.6% in the varenicline group and 26.8% in the combination nicotine replacement group (patch+lozenge).

All medications were well tolerated, but varenicline produced more frequent adverse events than did the nicotine patch for vivid dreams, insomnia, nausea, constipation, sleepiness, and indigestion.
