Summary
In patients scheduled to receive highly emetogenic chemotherapy (n=638), the addition of thalidomide (100mg twice daily on days 1 to 5) to palonosetron and dexamethasone increased complete response rates in the delayed phase (25-120 hours; 76.9% v 61.7%; p<0.001).
UKMi comment
Thalidomide was widely used to ameliorate nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, but was withdrawn in Europe in the late 1950s when it was found to be teratogenic. It is now licensed in the UK for the treatment of multiple myeloma but must be prescribed and dispensed according to the Pregnancy Prevention Programme. It is not currently licensed for the management of nausea and vomiting in any setting.
