Lifestyle Intervention and Medical Management With vs Without Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Control of Hemoglobin A1c, LDL Cholesterol, and Systolic Blood Pressure at 5 Years in the Diabetes Surgery Study

RCT (n=120) found that more patients who had a gastric bypass in conjunction with lifestyle intervention (LI) and medical management (MM) achieved HbA1c <7%, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol <2.6mmol/L and systolic blood pressure <130mmHg vs LI and MM alone (23% vs 4%, p=0.01)

A separate study found that obese patients given surgery had a lower likelihood of new onset of hypertension, a greater likelihood of diabetes remission but a greater risk of new-onset depression as compared to medically managed patients
