Single-dose versus 7-day-dose metronidazole for the treatment of trichomoniasis in women: an open-label, randomised controlled trial

Summary
RCT (n=623) reported that patients in the 7-day-dose (500 mg bd) group were less likely to be T vaginalis positive at 4 weeks than the single 2g- dose group (11% vs 19%, RR 0.55, 95% CI 0.34–0.70; p<0.0001). Self-reported adherence was 96% vs 99%, respectively.

A related commentary notes that these results of the trial, alongside the authors' previous findings, provide strong evidence for adoption of the 7-day-dose treatment regimen as the primary recommended treatment for trichomoniasis in women. Furthermore, to prevent re-exposure and re-infection, it is recommends that clinicians provide treatment for all recent sexual partners.
