Veverimer is a non-absorbed, counterion-free, polymeric drug which selectively binds and removes hydrochloric acid from the gastrointestinal lumen, unlike current oral sodium bicarbonate therapy for metabolic acidosis that only neutralises accumulated acid.
The authors of a related commentary note that these results highlight another opportunity to use absorption within the gut to partially replace elements of kidney function.
