Antipsychotics often scored worse than placebo for side-effect outcomes. Authors found older antipsychotics were associated with more extrapyramidal side-effects and raised prolactin (with some exceptions, e.g. amisulpride, paliperidone, and risperidone). Contrastingly, newer antipsychotics resulted in more weight gain and sedation. Authors considered weight gain to be a good indicator for metabolic side-effects in this review. Specific metabolic side-effects such as glucose, insulin, cholesterol and triglycerides are to be addressed in future reviews.
