Summary
This review of 1800 reports on prevalence covering 161 countries is first global assessment of country-level population prevalence of chronic hepatitis B infection. It found a wide variation between countries and highlights need for continued prevention and control strategies.

A commentary notes that the WHO has recently released clinical guidelines for the management of chronic hepatitis B virus infection (HBV), which emphasise that all people living with HBV worldwide require ongoing monitoring and care - with nearly 250 million people living with chronic infection, innovative strategies to address HBV will clearly be required.
