The researchers suggest that alcohol could increase the risk of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) through its effects on sex hormones, as well as serotonin and gamma-amino butyric acid activity. However this type of research cannot establish causality, and there is the possibility of reverse causation, whereby women may increase their alcohol consumption in response to their PMS symptoms.
