A commentary commends the researchers for their massive effort in expertly and systematically summarising the literature on suicide prevention strategies from the last ten years. It notes that although some conclusions from this review are straightforward and have been recognised as effective prevention strategies over many years, other conclusions cannot be made at this time. Nonetheless, it concludes that this review fulfils an important role in highlighting areas of potential discrepancy between expert opinion (e.g. need for follow-up care), legislation (e.g. black-box warnings on antidepressant use in youth), or public policy (e.g. general public awareness campaigns), and available scientific data, identifying areas in which research must be focused to effect meaningful change on suicide.
