Evidence from China suggests smokers at greater risk of severe respiratory disease from COVID-19

PHE has highlighted the results of a small Chinese study suggesting smokers are at a higher risk of developing severe disease from the COVID-19 virus, and is urging people to stop smoking for their own health and to protect those around them.

SPS commentary:

A study from China of 78 patients with COVID-19-induced pneumonia found the group who had deteriorated 2 weeks after hospitalisation had a higher proportion of patients with a history of smoking (27.3% vs 3.0% of those who stabilised/improved).
