Generation time of the alpha and delta SARS-CoV-2 variants: an epidemiological analysis

UK study found the delta variant transmits more quickly in households than the alpha variant (mean intrinsic generation time 4.7 days versus 5.5 days, respectively). The authors note contact tracing, testing and isolation may be less effective if virus transmission occurs quickly

SPS commentary:

A related editorial notes that the observed shorter incubation period of the Omicron variant implies a further shortened generation interval, and that household studies with similar designs to the current study should be conducted to assess its transmissibility and generation interval, and vaccine effectiveness against Omicron so that control policies can be amended in a timely manner if necessary.
