Genomic evidence for reinfection with SARS-CoV-2: a case study

Finding of case study (25 yr old man in US) suggest the patient was infected on two separate occasions by a genetically distinct virus; thus previous exposure might not guarantee total immunity in all cases and all individuals should continue to take identical precautions.

SPS commentary:

Authors of a related commentary suggest that as more cases of reinfection surface, the scientific community will have the opportunity to understand better the correlates of protection and how frequently natural infections with SARS-CoV-2 induce that level of immunity; and they state this information is key to understanding which vaccines are capable of crossing that threshold to confer individual and herd immunity.
