Ibuprofen to be tested in clinical trial in UK for treating patients with respiratory distress due toCOVID-19

Studies in animals have suggested that it might be beneficial in acute respiratory distress syndrome. In the LIBERATE trial ibuprofen 200 mg in a liquid capsule formulation will be tested against standard of care in those with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure due to COVID-19

SPS commentary:

Early in the pandemic there were some concerns that ibuprofen might be detrimental in COVID-19, however the most recent MHRA review concluded that there is currently insufficient evidence to establish a link between use of ibuprofen, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and contracting or worsening of COVID19.

For mild coronavirus symptoms, the NHS Choices website advises people try paracetamol first, as it has fewer side-effects than ibuprofen and is the safer choice for most people.
