Impact of Guideline-Directed Statin Intervention for Primary Prevention in Patients With Diabetes

In study (n=282,298 [10.2% diabetic], USA), only two-thirds of intermediate & high-risk (IHR) diabetic patients were on guideline-directed statin intensity therapy (GDSIT) at 5-year follow-up. Diabetics in IHR groups not on statin (vs on GDSIT) had higher risk of stroke/mortality

SPS commentary:

High-risk patients with diabetes not taking any statin had a significantly higher risk of incident coronary artery disease (HR 1.36; 95% CI 1.02–1.82) and stroke (1.76; 1.41–2.19) compared with their counterparts receiving GDSI therapy. Both intermediate-risk (2.18; 1.79–2.65) and high-risk (1.81; 1.58–2.07) patients with diabetes had a higher risk of mortality when not taking statins.
