Low back pain and sciatica in over 16s: 4 assessment and management: Draft Guideline for consultation

DRAFT guidance outlines physical, psychological, pharmacological and surgical treatments, with aim of improving people’s quality of life by promoting the most effective forms of care for low back pain and sciatica.

SPS commentary:

New DRAFT recommendations regarding pharmacological management of sciatica are as follows:

  • Do not offer gabapentinoids, other antiepileptics, oral corticosteroids or benzodiazepines for managing sciatica.
  • Do not offer opioids for managing chronic sciatica.
  • If a person is already taking opioids, gabapentinoids or benzodiazepines for sciatica, explain the risks of continuing these medicines.

If a shared decision is made to stop opioids, gabapentinoids or benzodiazepines for sciatica, discuss the problems associated withwithdrawal with the person.
