Mortality in adults with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and HIV by antiretroviral therapy and tuberculosis drug use: an individual patient data meta-analysis

The odds of death was higher in those with HIV infection (adjusted OR 2.4; 95% CI 2.0-2.9) and highest for those not taking antiretrovirals (4.2; 3.0-5.9). Use of moxifloxacin, levofloxacin, bedaquiline or linezolid was associated with decreased odds of death.

A Comment discusses the results of this study and notes the data provide a good guide on the need for adequate antiretroviral therapy and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment to achieve a favourable outcome, which more countries will aim towards in the global effort to improve outcomes in tuberculosis and HIV.
