Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome Related to COVID-19 in Previously Healthy Children and Adolescents in New York City

Study (n=17) describes similar clinical characteristics for patients with paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome, 8 of whom also met criteria for typical Kawasaki disease (KD) and 5 for incomplete KD; suggesting shared etiologic and pathophysiologic pathways.

SPS commentary:

Authors of a related commentary state Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS), which has emerged with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (PIMS-TS), shares multiple clinical and laboratory features with KD. They also highlight that PIMS-TS and KD have substantial differences as well as similarities, as reported in another study in this journal (Whittaker et al), which suggests age being a major difference (median age, 9 years for children with PIMS-TS vs 2.7 years for those with KD).
