Preoperative iron treatment in anaemic patients undergoing elective total hip or knee arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Meta-analysis (10 studies; n=2178) found iron vs no iron was associated with reduced risk of perioperative blood transfusion (RR 0.61); reduction in number of red blood cell units transfused (mean difference −0.37units) and reduced length of stay (mean 2.08 days) (all p<0.001).
