Recommendations for statin management in primary prevention: disparities among international risk scores

This study compared algorithms from North America & Europe and found they differed substantially in their estimation of risk, recommendations for statin treatment and use of ancillary testing, even in identical patients. The results highlight the limitations of current approaches

SPS commentary:

Four risk algorithms were selected for analysis:

  • Framingham Risk Score (FRS) used in Canada
  • Pooled Cohort Equation used in USA
  • Updated SCORE2 algorithm recommended by the European Society of Cardiology and the European Atherosclerosis Society
  • Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) risk algorithm incorporates coronary artery calcium score
