Revised SPCs: Efexor XL 75 and 225 mg prolonged-release capsules, hard products

SPCs have been updated with information regarding discontinuation of treatment with venlafaxine.

SPS commentary:

SPCs now highlight that abrupt discontinuation should be avoided. When stopping treatment, the dose should be gradually reduced over a period of at least 1-2 weeks in order to reduce the risk of withdrawal reactions. However, the time period required for tapering and the amount of dose reduction may depend on the dose, duration of therapy and the individual patient. In some patients, discontinuation may need to occur very gradually over periods of months or longer. If intolerable symptoms occur following a decrease in the dose or upon discontinuation of treatment, then resuming the previously prescribed dose may be considered. Subsequently, the physician may continue decreasing the dose, but at a more gradual rate.
